How to Protect Yourself from Robotexts and Spam Messages

You don't have to put up with garbage messages or robotexts. Here's how to stop spam SMS from appearing in your inbox.

You check your phone enthusiastically when you hear the sound of an incoming text message, but it's only a spam message sent to you by a spammer trying to trick you into clicking a link, opening an attachment, contacting a number, or doing something else that will get you into trouble.

Robotexts and spam messages, like robocalls and junk email, are a part of life. They may not be as intrusive as a spam call because they are largely ignored, but it does not make them harmless. If you're not careful, some phone plans may charge you for incoming text messages, and smishing (SMS phishing) attempts can be even more damaging.

You do not, however, have to put up with them. With the correct methods and tools, you can block and stop robotexts just like you can stop spam phone calls.

Do Not React

To begin with, do not interact with the message. If you click on a link or attachment in a spam message, your phone may become infected with malware. You don't want to answer, either. Many legal robotexts contain a STOP option for notifying the company to remove you from their distribution list, but scammers ignore this.

In reality, responding to a spam message merely serves to indicate to the scammer that your phone number is legitimate. Your phone number may then be passed on to other scammers, increasing your chances of receiving further spam messages. You're better off not responding at all unless you know the SMS came from a legitimate company that honors such demands.
