Through cooperation with Google, the repair website iFixit will sell official replacement components for Pixel devices.
It has been selling third-party spare parts for Pixel smartphones for a while now. However, it appears that Google is now officially supporting the endeavor, citing the need to make ecologically friendly products as a reason.
"We want you to have a wonderful experience with your Pixel phone," Google said in a statement announcing the agreement. "That includes simple access to high-quality and secure device repair if your phone is ever broken."
Starting with the Pixel 2 and continuing through the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, as well as future Pixel models, genuine spare parts will include batteries, screens, camera modules, and more.
Later this year, authentic replacement parts should begin to appear on iFixit.com. Customers in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and the European Union will be allowed to purchase the parts.
The businesses plan to offer the spare parts separately as well as in packages that contain iFixit toolkits for doing the manual repairs. In a blog post, iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens said, "Each kit comes with the iOpener, our opening tool intended to deliver heat directly and uniformly to case components connected with glue." "Replacement pre-cut glue for fastening and re-waterproofing your Pixel is also included in the packages."
iFixit will also continue to provide step-by-step guidelines on how to fix Pixel phones, making it easier for owners to do so themselves.
