Facebook to stop recommending civic and political groups

Facebook will stop recommending users join "civic and political" groups, because it tries to scale back the amount of political posts in people's feeds.

It follows weeks of suppressing such content round the US election but will now become permanent policy round the world.

Mark Zuckerberg announced the change during a call with investors.

"People don't need politics and fighting to require over," the Facebook boss told those on the decision .

It remains unclear what "civic groups" covers, and the way the change could affect grassroots campaigning.

'Divisive conversations'

The decision follows months of pressure over the spread of misinformation on Facebook.

And Mr Zuckerberg said it wanted "to confirm the communities people connect with are healthy and positive".

"There also are tons of groups that we might not want to encourage people to hitch , albeit they do not violate our policies," he said.

"Now, we decide to keep civic and political groups out of recommendations for the future ."

  • Facebook bans the sale of community groups

This was "a continuation of labor we've been doing for a short time to show down the temperature and discourage divisive conversations and communities", Mr Zuckerberg said.

Facebook groups are often used for legitimate community organising and grassroots campaigns, however, something Mr Zuckerberg "want[s] to be ready to keep happening".

"But one among the highest pieces of feedback we're hearing from our community immediately is that folks don't need politics and fighting to require over their experience on our services," he added.

Facebook banned quite a million groups in 2020.
